Quidditch is coming

Quidditch players in action

Oxford has been announced as the venue for the 2018 British Quidditch Cup. Last year’s champions, Velociraptors QC, return to defend their title on March 24th-25th. Quidditch is a fast-paced sport adapted from the game in J.K. Rowling’s novels with several local, national and international tournaments. The sport is played by men and women.

There will be 32 teams competing to become the country’s top quidditch team in the annual British Quidditch Cup.

Organised by QuidditchUK, the fifth BQC will see the best teams in the country compete for the top spot at Brookes Sport Botley, Oxford. The tournament is a non-ticket event where everyone can watch.

President of QuidditchUK, Mel Piper, said: ‘We are thrilled to be returning to Oxford for the fifth British Quidditch Cup. The tournament will be fiercely competitive with the top 32 teams in the country qualified to participate – the well-prepared facilities at Brookes Sport are perfect for the competition.’

The game: Oxford hosted the first British Quidditch Cup in 2013 when 16 teams competed. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity to now have more than 800 players and 40 active teams in the UK. A match consists of two teams of seven made up of a keeper, three chasers, two beaters and a seeker. The keeper and chasers use the quaffle to score goals through the three hoops at the end of the pitch. The beaters use the bludgers to temporarily knock out opposing players. Finally, seekers try to catch the snitch to end the game.
