Aylesbury Opera presents this classic verismo double bill in a fully staged production with orchestra. Performances will be sung in Italian (with English surtitles). We have assembled a fine cast of professional singers for both pieces, conducted by Musical Director Kelvin Lim, with stage direction and design by Louise Bakker.
Cavalleria Rusticana details the lives of its doomed characters within their rural Sicilian community, culminating in a tragic finale. Santuzza’s melancholic ‘Voi lo sapete, o mama’ and the Easter Hymn are among the many musical highlights.
I Pagliacci overtly plays with our ideas of what is real and what is not, leading to a brilliant finale, in which we watch the onstage audience slowly understand that a tragedy is unfurling before them. Its blistering mix of seedy realism and theatrical drama has made it a key part of the repertory; highlights include Nedda’s ‘Stridono lassù’ and Canio’s ‘Vesti la giubba’.
Tickets £5 – £20 available from www.courttheatre.co.uk or the box office: Beechwood Fine Foods, Frogmore Street, Tring, HP23 5AU (cash or cheque only).
