Boundary adjustments for Buckingham, Haddenham and Winslow

Buckinghamshire Council has adopted new Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans for Buckingham, Haddenham, and Winslow, updating boundary lines to better protect and enhance the distinctive character and heritage of these Buckinghamshire towns.

Following detailed assessment, a six-week public consultation, and engagement with town and parish councils, local community groups, and residents, Buckingham’s Conservation Area has been extended, while Haddenham and Winslow have seen a combination of additions and removals to ensure boundaries accurately reflect the special character of each area.

Buckingham : The Conservation Area has been expanded in four locations. The updated area now comprises four Character Areas, defined by building topography, historical development, land use, and appearance.
Haddenham: The Conservation Area boundary has been revised, with four additions and two removals, resulting in ten Character Areas.
Winslow: The Conservation Area boundary has been revised with two additions and two removals, alongside minor refinements to follow plot lines more accurately. The updated Conservation Area will comprise five Character Areas.

Buckinghamshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning, Peter Strachan said:

“The Conservation Areas, as set out in the updated Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans, give the Council a stronger framework to preserve and enhance the distinctive architecture, character, and heritage of these three towns.

“Buckinghamshire is fortunate to have a wealth of historic buildings and places, and we must do all we can to protect them for future generations. Reviewing our Conservation Areas helps us to do just that.

“There can sometimes be myths and misunderstandings about what it means to live in a Conservation Area. To address this, we are publishing a set of Frequently Asked Questions alongside the Conservation Area Plans , which I’d encourage residents to read.”

Women in History theme for Aylesbury town centre festivities

St George’s Day celebrations are back for 2026, taking place on Sunday 26th April across Aylesbury Town Centre. The Historical Fayre will run from 12-4pm in multiple locations, including: Friars Square Shopping Centre, Market Square and the Kings Head Pub, followed by a Uniformed Parade and Service of Thanks from 4-5pm.

Chiltern Open Air Museum back from winter break and celebrating 50 Years of Living History

Tudors: Life, Falconry and Folk 4-day Easter event

2026 is a very special year for the Chiltern Open Air Museum, near Chalfont St Giles, which celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Founded in 1976, the Museum has spent five decades rescuing, preserving and re-erecting historic buildings, creating a unique 45-acre site where visitors can step back in time and experience history first-hand.

Throughout the season, you can see historical re-enactments bringing different periods of history to life. Traditional craft demonstrations displaying heritage skills such as blacksmithing, woodworking and textiles. Living history weekends with costumed interpreters across the site and family-friendly trails and hands-on activities.

Over the 4-day Easter weekend, Tudors: Life, Falconry and Folk event is taking place showing historic falconry flying demonstrations and Tudor living history. Explore the tools of the barber/surgeon, learn the craft of the basket maker and loom weaver, try on armour of the era with the man-at-arms and meet the “cunning man” skilled in the preserving of skins. You will also be able to see the Oxford Down lambs born at the museum and can take part in the sheep trail.

Visitors will be able to explore over 30 historic buildings, from Medieval barns, Victorian cottages and 1940s prefab set within beautiful Chiltern countryside.

The 2026 season runs from 7 March to late October, with special events scheduled throughout the spring and summer.

Travellers blocked by council injunction

Traveller activities were breaking the law on land at Dinton

A High Court injunction has been granted after travellers moved caravans and materials to create an area of hardstanding, onto farmland within a conservation area at Dinton, near Aylesbury.

Buckinghamshire Council became aware of the situation when villagers reported seeing lorries and diggers moving earth to create a hardstanding on 28 th February. A court order was then sought to prevent further vehicles and materials arriving at the field and participating in "unauthorised development" of the land. The injunction was almost immediately breached when a mobile home was taken onto the site later the same day.

The land, which is to the south of Upton Road, was sold last year by Michael Cook, who said he did so knowing it could not be developed due to a covenant and was only be used for agriculture.

He said he had sold roughly half of a larger field. That land was subsequently split into smaller plots and sold again at auction.

BBC Local News spoke to a man who identified himself as the landowner, but declined to be named. He told the BBC that he and his associates were gypsies and travellers who had nowhere else to go, and that he had applied for planning permission late on 27th February. The BBC has been unable to verify which plots of land the man owns.

Peter Strachan, the council's Conservative deputy leader and cabinet member for planning, said: "We know that this has been a worrying issue for the local community which is why we took immediate action. As with any legal matter, we must follow the correct procedures to ensure our actions taken are fully compliant with the law."

He said breaches were taken seriously and he hoped it "sends a clear message to everyone that it is important to abide by rules and regulations". He added that the situation would be monitored closely.

Under the terms of the injunction, no-one is allowed to:

Live on the site
Carry out any further works, including laying hardstandings, clearing ground or putting up fencing
Bring any more caravans, mobile homes, structures or materials on to the land
Encourage or help anyone else to move on to the site
Deposit waste or other materials
Create new tracks or roadways
Install any utilities or services such as water, electricity or sewers
Divide the land into plots or make any further alterations
Bring additional vehicles or machinery on to the site

On Tuesday, firefighters put out a blaze after a mobile home burnt down overnight.

National recognition for Aylesbury school

Bedgrove Junior School achieves Centre of Excellence status for oracy practice

Bedgrove Junior School , part of Great Learners Trust , has been recognised as a Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence for its work developing children’s skills to become confident speakers, listeners and communicators to succeed in both school and in later life.

Voice 21 is the UK’s oracy education charity, working with schools nationwide to transform the learning and life chances of young people through talk, and campaigning for oracy to have a higher status in the education system. Its Oracy Centres of Excellence are “leading the way in providing a high-quality oracy education for their students, acting as beacons of good practice for oracy across the school system”.

Bedgrove Junior received the Oracy Centre of Excellence status after an assessment process – application, evidence sharing and review days – to celebrate the school’s successes, showcase excellence and signal possible areas for further development. It had to demonstrate how five Oracy Benchmarks, Voice 21’s nationally recognised standard for oracy education, were “fully embedded” in the school: an ambitious vision for oracy, builds a culture of oracy, has a sustained and wide-ranging curriculum for oracy, recognises oracy as central to learning, and is accountable for the impact of oracy.

“Our aim is for all children to be inspired to communicate in different ways and for different purposes,” said the Aylesbury school’s Headteacher Harry Hillier. “This involves being able to respond to social cues and act in a respectful way whilst engaging in meaningful and purposeful discussions. Children are challenged to think critically to succeed, preparing themselves for future in a fast-moving, diverse world.

“As a Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence, we put oracy at the heart of teaching and learning across all subjects. Research shows that speaking and listening play a key role in developing critical thinking and deeper understanding, helping children strengthen their knowledge via meaningful talk in the classroom. We support children to become articulate and effective communicators who are able to present themselves confidently across a range of settings and contexts, from group discussions to formal presentations.”

The Oracy Framework used by the school is broken down into four distinct strands – physical, cognitive, linguistic and social and emotional. “Within the classroom, we use a variety of strategies and resources to promote a culture for oracy including setting oracy guidelines with our classes based on the framework,” Harry continued.

“In short, oracy is now integral to everything we do. It actually started as a teacher-led initiative. One of our teachers had researched oracy independently, was inspired by the evidence behind it, and began trialling strategies with her class. Before I became Head here, I visited the school as a deputy head from another setting. I came specifically to look at English teaching. I was invited into that teacher’s classroom and it was genuinely the best lesson I had seen in a decade. The children were interacting respectfully, using incredibly high-level language. The teacher was not scrambling for answers – she was facilitating. It was a completely different classroom dynamic. That experience stayed with me. Two years later, when the headship came up at Bedgrove, I knew I wanted to be part of this school.”

On arrival, Harry worked with colleagues who has been trained in oracy – observing lessons, understanding the strategies, and leadership approach.

“It was clear there was something powerful going on here,” Harry recalled. “We began by embedding oracy into our Healthy Minds curriculum (formerly PSHE), increasing structured discussion and explicitly teaching speaking and listening strategies. Once it was embedded in PSHE, we moved it into guided reading, then beyond that. Eventually, we reached a turning point: oracy was not an ‘add-on’ subject. It needed to be woven through everything. Now, it is embedded in our mission, our intent statements, our curriculum design. I am confident you could walk into any classroom at any time and see oracy in action. Some teachers are flying with it; others are still developing – but it is everywhere.

“As part of that journey, a development partner from Voice 21 told us our practice was exceptionally strong – comparable with their flagship schools – and we were still in our early phase. They then encouraged us to pursue accreditation.”

Impacts within the school are already evidenced and are a contributor to Bedgrove Junior being recognised as a Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence.

Harry summarised: “Our greater depth readers have improved year-on-year since embedding oracy. In guided reading, pupils debate character motivation, author intent, inference – they really interrogate texts. That live discussion deepens understanding far beyond silent reading. What is powerful is that even pupils not yet at age-related expectations can contribute meaningfully. They may not decode fluently, but they can form opinions, articulate reasoning and engage in discussion – and that accelerates understanding. Beyond data, there is the qualitative impact: confidence, articulation, resilience. We run public speaking competitions. We submitted pupil voice videos as part of accreditation. One phrase a child used, ‘Oracy helps me be brave’, is now featured on the Voice 21 website.”

Then there are the many wonderful anecdotes, as remembered by Harry. “After one oracy open morning, a parent told me her daughter had just moved to the area and had grown enormously in confidence. She said, ‘Now I understand where that confidence is coming from’. At a summer event, a local business owner shook my hand and said: ‘You’re explicitly teaching skills businesses desperately need – eye contact, articulation, confidence’. But perhaps the most powerful feedback came from secondary headteachers – both selective and non-selective – who said: “You can tell which pupils are from Bedgrove. They’re engaged. They contribute. They’re not afraid to fail’. That, for me, has been the ultimate endorsement.”

Transport Plan Consultation Launch

Buckinghamshire Council asks residents, businesses and visitors to take part in a public transport plan consultation

Buckinghamshire Council is inviting residents, businesses and visitors to take part in a public consultation on the draft Local Transport Plan 5 (LTP5), running from 16 February to 30 March 2026 .

LTP5 sets out how the council aims to make travelling around Buckinghamshire easier, safer and more accessible, while improving travel choices for all. The plan looks ahead to 2045 and will guide how transport improvements are planned, funded and delivered across local communities, the road network and public transport over the next 20 years.

The draft plan brings together 31 policies across nine themes, focused on connecting the economy, reducing transport emissions and creating high‑quality places. These policies are intended to steer future investment and day‑to‑day decisions that affect town centres, villages and local high streets.

Alongside the draft LTP5, the council is also seeking views on the draft Freight and Logistics Strategy, which looks at practical ways to manage goods and deliveries so that streets work well for residents, businesses and the environment.

Thomas Broom, Buckinghamshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“This is your chance to influence how we all get around Buckinghamshire – now and in the years to come. We want a local transport network that’s safe and reliable, with sensible choices for every journey: better, more accessible public transport; well‑designed streets and safer roads; and realistic options to walk, wheel and cycle. Your feedback will help us prioritise the right improvements in the right places, including how we manage freight and deliveries. Please take a few minutes to respond and help us shape a plan that works for everyone.”

Consultation feedback will help the council balance priorities such as road safety and maintenance, bus and rail connectivity, walking, wheeling and cycling, and the way town and village centres are designed to support local communities and businesses. Responses will also be fed into the plan‑making process for the Local Plan for Buckinghamshire, currently expected to reach Regulation 19 consultation in July 2026.

Aylesbury bids for Inaugural UK Town of Culture 2028 Title

Winning title could mean £3m in government funding for a six-month cultural programme in 2028

Aylesbury has submitted its Expression of Interest to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028, setting out an ambitious vision that celebrates the town’s historic significance, creative energy and strong community spirit.

Launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), the national competition aims to recognise towns across the UK and support them to deliver ambitious cultural programmes that build pride, strengthen communities and showcase local identity.

As the county town, Aylesbury has long served as the cultural and civic heart of Buckinghamshire. Referenced in the Domesday Book and granted its charter by Queen Mary in 1554, the town’s history spans centuries. Its heritage is reflected in landmarks such as St Mary the Virgin Church, which dates back to the 13th Century, and the Market Square statue of Colonel John Hampden (MP for Wendover 1625-1629 and mortally wounded in the Battle of Aylesbury in 1642), alongside significant moments in modern cultural history, including David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust debut at Friars Aylesbury.

Together with its long-standing mayoral traditions, vibrant programme of community events and musical legacy, these foundations form the basis of a bold vision for Aylesbury’s cultural future. The bid reflects the town’s ambition to play a leading role in shaping the future cultural landscape of the county, strengthening its position as a hub for heritage, creativity and community life.

Aylesbury was referenced in the Domesday Book, hosted King Henry VIII, and more recently launched the careers of many of the country’s musical legends via the Friars Club. New gates will make Chilterns countryside more accessible

National Trust ranger install 75 replacement gates

As part of the National Trust’s commitment to making the countryside more accessible for everyone, 75 gates have been replaced at Coombe Hill, Bradenham, Pulpit Hill and Hughenden.

Neil Harris, National Trust Countryside manager said:

“We’ve been moving to a stile-free approach for many years, but after partnering with the Disabled Ramblers Association, we’ve made a further step change in how we think about access – removing unnecessary barriers, designing for visitors and ensuring that our paths, gates and crossings work for everyone who wants to enjoy the beautiful countryside in the Chilterns that we look after.”

The old infrastructure was around 25 years old and wearing out. Replacement offered the team the opportunity to think carefully about outdoor furniture with respect to disabled access. The ideal is to have paths with no barrier at all, but where barriers were needed, for instance to contain livestock or exclude deer, the team employed a hierarchy of preference from accessible gates to kissing gates large enough for powered wheelchairs and mobility vehicles.

All the new gates are at least 1.5m wide, are gently self-closing and have a large pull handle that can be operated from a seated position. Handles and catches are painted yellow so visually impaired people can easily see how to operate the gate.

Mark de Rivaz, Treasurer of the Disabled Ramblers Association said:

“At Hughenden, the National Trust is making fantastic progress with its gate replacement project to improve accessibility for all along the paths and tracks that criss-cross the estate.

“The Disabled Ramblers Association campaigns for the removal of gates and other obstacles where possible and practicable, or the replacement of existing hard-to-navigate gates with more user friendly ones, that can be easily opened and closed by a wide variety of countryside users – not only disabled people, but also families with buggies, elderly or infirm people and, where permitted, horse riders and cyclists.

“There are real, tangible physical and mental health benefits for everyone in getting out into the countryside and we are keen to encourage all landowners to do what they can to facilitate this.”

Disabled Ramblers is working with the National Trust at Hughenden on the next phase of works, which is to design routes and upgrade footpaths where necessary in order help create a network of safe, accessible routes around the estate for the enjoyment of all.

Chargeable service will help carers, patients and hospice

The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted is launching ‘Respite for Good’ this February – a new chargeable service offering short-term residential care for people who rely on family carers for help with everyday tasks.

This onsite personal care service is designed to give family carers the break they deserve while ensuring their loved ones receive exceptional care in a safe and supportive environment.

Four onsite rooms will be available for booking periods of up to two weeks. These modern rooms combine comfort and safety with an adjustable bed, en-suite bathroom, call system, Wi-Fi/smart TV and nutritious home-cooked meals to create a relaxing environment. Further thoughtful touches like wellbeing activities, views over the beautiful gardens and natural light ensure a sense of peace and calm.

Respite care in the Hospice will provide invaluable support for both guests and their families. For caregivers, the responsibility of looking after a loved one can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Respite care offers a temporary break, allowing them to rest, recharge, and attend to personal needs without compromising the quality of care their loved one receives.

Respite for Good reflects a growing need for flexible care options. By offering respite care in four dedicated rooms, The Hospice of St Francis can generate additional income to help fund its core

mission – sustaining and strengthening free hospice care for over 2,000 local patients and families each year. This innovative approach will help secure the future of compassionate care in our community.

Equine welfare charity The Horse Trust has welcomed three new donkeys to its sanctuary in Speen, near Princes Risborough, marking a step in the charity’s ongoing investment into donkey-specific care.

The new arrivals – Milly (16), her mother Molly (20), and Gus (17) – arrived quietly over the festive period and spent their first Christmas settling into the sanctuary where they are receiving lots of love, comfort and expert care. They were rehomed after their previous owner was no longer able to provide the specialist support they required, and at the request of The Donkey Sanctuary, The Horse Trust stepped in to offer them a lifelong home.

With ears longer than most of the charity’s equine residents and personalities to match, Milly, Molly and Gus have already begun bringing companionship, lots of fun, and what staff describe as “a little extra bray” to the paddocks they now call home.

Investing in donkey care

The Horse Trust has a long-standing commitment to equine welfare and is now actively expanding both its donkey family and the facilities that support them. Donkeys have unique physical, behavioural and social needs and typically live significantly longer. On average, donkeys can live well into their 30s and beyond - meaning a much greater long-term investment in their care.

The Horse Trust has been home to some extraordinary donkeys including Briar, Henry and Troy, who each lived to over 40 years old and became some of the charity’s longest-serving residents. Their longevity highlights both the responsibility and the privilege of providing lifelong care.

As the charity expands its donkey family, it is also investing in enhanced donkey paddocks, enrichment and facilities, designed to support natural behaviours, social bonds and long-term wellbeing across decades of care.

Care from day one

Since arrival, Milly, Molly and Gus have been supported through a careful settling-in period, including isolation, routine health checks, enrichment activities and gentle reassurance from experienced teams.

Molly and her daughter Milly share a particularly strong bond, which has been especially heartening to observe as they navigate this major life change together. Their relationship mirrors that of fellow sanctuary residents Lola and Nora, a much-loved mother-and-daughter donkey duo rescued by The Horse Trust following the Spindles Farm cruelty case - one of the most high-profile animal welfare cases in the UK, which attracted national and local attention.

Now thriving many years on, Lola and Nora’s story stands as a powerful example of the long-term impact of specialist, compassionate care.

Groundbreaking science for Buckinghamshire Healthcare

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has announced the introduction of AVITA Medical’s RECELL GO™, an innovative medical device that transforms the way burns and complex wounds are treated. This cutting-edge technology enables clinicians to create a spray of a patient’s own skin cells, significantly improving healing outcomes. The next generation ‘GO’ device is an upgrade to the previous manual device and allows for more consistent and reliable outcomes.

Traditionally, treating severe burns requires large skin grafts. The site of skin graft harvest can be painful, leave additional scars and delay recovery. Using RECELL™ means that a small sample of skin can go a long way and can reduce the need for such extensive skin graft harvest, as the spray covers a much larger area. This approach not only speeds up wound healing but also reduces hospital stay, pain, and scarring—delivering better overall outcomes for burns and trauma patients.

The RECELL technique is particularly important for patients with pigmented skin, where restoring natural pigmentation after injury can be challenging. By using the patient’s own cells in a spray, RECELL helps to achieve more natural skin restoration with better colour match.

Originally developed by renowned Australian burns surgeon Professor Fiona Wood as a manual procedure, RECELL has now evolved into ‘RECELL GO,’ making treatment even more efficient. The system prepares the cell suspension spray during surgery, reducing the risk of manual error, and freeing up a pair of clinician’s hands, whilst ensuring better consistency of the spray, with reduced overall waste. This significantly reduces variability, whilst allowing the surgical team to focus on patient care.

The first case in the UK using the next-generation RECELL GO device was successfully performed on Monday 8th December at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, marking a significant milestone in advancing burn care within the Trust and the UK. This was led and performed by their new burns and plastics consultant, Miss Nada Al-Hadithy, alongside specialist, Mr Paul Poynter-Smith.

Murders make money for Museum

Something to see here - Thame tours are a must for fans of Midsomer Murders

At the end of 2025 Thame Midsomer Tours made their largest charitable donation since the tours began, with £1,500 gifted to the Thame Mayor’s Charities and £1500 to Thame Museum , also a registered charity. Thousands of Midsomer fans and tourists from around the world have now taken a Midsomer Walking Tour since they began eight years ago. Including this year’s donation of £3,000, the popular tours have now produced more than £16,000 of charitable donations.

Thame is one of Midsomer Murders' most-filmed locations, sometimes appearing as Causton, sometimes as one of the many picturesque villages in Midsomer County (aka Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire). The tour covers the 23 Midsomer filming locations in Thame.

Midsomer Guided Walking Tours of Thame will re-start on Wednesday 1st April and then take place every Wednesday until 28th October 2026. There will also be tours every Saturday from 6th June until 26th September. The tours last around 90 minutes and start at 2pm from outside Thame Town Hall. Buckinghamshire schools in Den-style eco-tech challenge

Year 12 students from six secondary schools in Buckinghamshire have taken part in the Dragons’ Den-style final of the Green Schools Challenge.

Students from Buckingham School won over the panel of judges, who were impressed by the students’ ‘Junk to Genius’ idea, ‘giving old tech new life’ and reducing the demand for new Chromebooks to be built, thereby saving energy and resources.

Organised by Buckinghamshire Council in partnership with Bucks Skills Hub and local businesses, the event enabled Year 12 students from Buckingham School, Waddesdon Church of England School, Highcrest Academy, John Colet School, Aylesbury High School, and St Michael’s Catholic School, to learn from professionals in the field of green technology and sustainable business practices; helping them to develop and display a range of green skills, employability, technical, creative and academic skills.

The Association for Project Management (APM) provided the initial challenge briefing to the schools, before each school was allocated a supporting business to mentor and help understand the challenge and then create and present their idea to help their school reduce their carbon footprint.

A huge thank you to all the schools and students who took part, and to the local businesses whose support helped make it such a success.

“This is the fourth time we’ve run this challenge with our secondary schools, and it’s fantastic to see how ideas around green technology can inspire real solutions for the environment.

“The passion and commitment shown by the students was outstanding. Their determination to make a positive impact is exactly what we need for the future. We’ll keep building on this initiative as part of our ongoing work to strengthen communities and tackle climate change through our #BucksClimateChallenge.”

The green technology challenge was the brainchild of Rachael Shimmin, Buckinghamshire Council’s CEO, after her visit in 2021 to see Lunaz’s innovative electric waste trucks. Rachael wanted to involve schoolchildren in thinking about how green technology can help solve problems and originally spoke with Lunaz and DMC who wanted to get involved, the concept then turned into a competition aimed at Year 12 students.

New children's home opens

Third local facility offering quality, nurturing, living places for children and young people in care is part of new transformation programme

Buckinghamshire Council will shortly open its third new children’s home as part of its transformation programme to provide quality, nurturing, local places to live for children and young people in care.

The Beeches will offer a welcoming and homely environment for children in the council’s care, as an alternative to foster care. The first new, council-run children’s homes, Lawrence Lodge and Pineview, opened earlier this year. Over the next two years Buckinghamshire Council plans to open a total of 10 homes across the county, where there is most need, so children can stay close to areas they know.

With more than 500 children currently under the care of Buckinghamshire Council, many are looked after by the growing community of in-house foster carers. For children who need an alternative, the council is creating 10 in-house homes which will offer secure and nurturing placements for more than thirty vulnerable young people.

Investing in children’s homes like The Beeches allows the council to keep children and young people in care within Buckinghamshire, close to their local community and friends, which is one of the core aims of the transformation programme. It also creates a significant cost saving for the council, of £7.5m per year from 27/28 (when all 10 homes will be up and running) by providing excellent care for our children at a lower cost than private-run children’s homes.

Carl Jackson, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Education & Children’s Services, attended the official opening of the new home on Friday 21st November.

He said: “It is important that children and young people in our care are offered a safe and nurturing place to call home which is close to everything they know. By opening children’s homes like The Beeches, we can provide better outcomes and brighter futures for vulnerable children and young people. At the same time, by creating our own in-house care homes, rather than using private providers, we can make significant savings which help our resources go further to support young people. It is a good result for everyone involved.”

The company recently bought and refurbished Aynho Park, the magnificent 73-acre estate between Bicester and Banbury, to create a first-of-its-kind design and hospitality destination. It opened to global acclaim in June 2023 complete with two restaurants and has now unveiled its newest signature dining experience, The Conservatory.

An architecturally-driven restaurant The Conservatory was conceived as a skylit garden escape befitting RH England's status as a premier lifestyle destination. Located in the meticulously restored east wing, formerly the estate's stable block and workshop, The Conservatory is a study in the harmony between architecture and landscape. The space is defined by a dramatic new glass ceiling that floods the interior with natural light and features a stunning lighting installation by renowned London designer Anouska Hempel, also known as Lady Weinberg.

Guests can enjoy breathtaking views across the expansive courtyard and of the historic St. Michael's Church, which dates back to the 14th century, while dining from the Conservatory menu. An extension of the culinary vision developed at RH Paris, the menu presents a curated collection of refined American and Mediterranean classics, including; Caviar Carpaccios, Petite Baked Potatoes, and the classic RH Burger. The Conservatory joins multiple other hospitality venues at RH England including; The Orangery, an open-fire restaurant with panoramic countryside views; The Loggia, featuring wood-fired pizzas, charcuterie boards and rustic shared plates in a beautiful outdoor setting; The Wine Lounge, serving exceptional champagnes and wines; and The Juicery, offering made-to-order fresh juices and craft espresso, and the Tea Salon, that serves a selection of speciality teas.

On our recent visit we were warmly welcomed by the friendly, professional staff and found it a stylish and comfortable place to relax. With three open fireplaces and plush banquettes to sit on, it was cosy although spacious, while the olive trees and hanging light feature added extra wow factor to the beautiful stone walls, glass ceiling and glazed courtyard doors with views beyond. The food and wine served were superb, each course perfectly prepared, cooked and presented. My Scottish Salmon Carpaccio with Petrossian Kaluga Caviar, Chives and Smoked Sea Salt was divine, but nearly topped by a delicious Rotisserie Chicken with Truffle Fries and perfectly roasted Asparagus, while my wife's Petite Filet with Bearnise Sauce couldn't have been better, once again complemented by Truffle Fries and Roasted Asparagus. Desserts were equally impressive - slightly crunchy but very gooey Housemade Chocolate Chip Cookies served warm with sea salt were decadence on a plate while my wife's Tiramisu was another triumph. The accompanying wines were excellent too, especially the Tokaji dessert wine.

The whole experience was wonderful and all the more so for being in such remarkable and historic surroundings and for the added experience of being able to stroll through the house and be inspired by the remarkable interiors on display. The Conservatory menu is not huge but has a clever combination of main and lighter dishes, so if you just fancy a salad, sandwich or burger, there are options, I may pop back for cookies and a coffee, they were rather moorish!

Zoo partnership to enhance patient care and rehabilitation

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is taking long-term Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients by to Whipsnade Zoo.

Whipsnade Zoo and St John Ambulance, patients have recently been able to experience therapeutic

visits to the zoo as part of their recovery journey. The initiative aims to support mental

wellbeing, encourage physical engagement, and offer a refreshing change from the hospital

environment.

Andy, who has been in ICU for ten months and before his accident was a keen walker, was the first

patient to visit the zoo and described his experience: “I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt safe with the

staff there and it was good for my mental wellbeing. The facilities at Whipsnade are fantastic,

especially the changing places, which can be used by anyone. It’s a real leap forward to have

facilities that support families with children with additional needs. They’ve really thought about

everything. I hope these visits will be the start of something wonderful for other patients too.

Yes, you have to be clinically stable, but you’re not going without the best nursing care. I’d

encourage people to say yes to opportunities, have the experience, and enjoy it. When you’re in

hospital for a long time, it can get very samey. But you can have a great day and still be very

well taken care of.”

Mark and his family also visited the zoo as part of the initiative. Mark has been in ICU for eight

months. Following the visit his daughter said: “To have a normal family outing and reconnect with

Dad away from the hospital was something we didn’t realise we needed, but now we know just how much

we did. Our ‘normal’ had become hospital corridors and clinical routines, and Dad had become ‘the

patient’. But on the day we visited he was simply Dad and Grandad to his grandchildren. In ICU you

care for the whole family, not just the patient and over the last eight months, your team has gone

above and beyond in doing exactly that.”

Sarah Shipley, Matron for ICU at the Trust said: “We’ve seen the incredible impact these

rehabilitation trips had on our ICU patients and their families. Being able to spend time outside

the hospital, reconnect with nature, and share meaningful moments together supports not only

physical recovery but emotional healing too. For families, it’s a chance to see their loved ones as

themselves again, not just as patients. And for our teams, it’s a powerful reminder of why we do

what we do. Recovery from critical care isn't just about survival, it's about living. These

experiences reinforce the importance of compassionate, person-centred care that reaches beyond the

ICU.”

Patrick Conlon, ZSL's Head of Health and Wellbeing Programmes, said: "I’m proud we’ve been able to

welcome a small number of long-term patients from Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust’s ICU and

their families to Whipsnade Zoo. Even in these early visits, we’ve seen how time spent in nature

can support recovery and reconnection. Being surrounded by wildlife and open space offers moments

of calm, joy and togetherness that can mean so much during recovery. We’re honoured to be working

with the Trust to explore how experiences with nature can play a meaningful role in wellbeing and

healing."

New woodland playground inspires a nature-filled 2026 at Waddesdon Manor

A n exciting new woodland playground, free for all the family to enjoy, will open in the grounds of Waddesdon Manor in 2026.

The playground has been designed for the Manor and its woodland setting, offering a rich connection with nature through play with imaginative structures, swings, slides and much more.

This unique, bespoke design is made using natural wood and other materials and has been created by playground specialists TouchWood exclusively for Waddesdon. The new space will be bursting with areas to climb, run and play or to just enjoy being outdoors, and includes extended easily accessible pathways for parents to get involved too.

And alongside this new playground Waddesdon Manor is planning further outdoor fun and experiences for 2026 with nature-inspired activities and events throughout the year.

It begins with a series of atmospheric, enchanting winter walks in January, when wh ether in snow, frost or low seasonal sun, you can enjoy winter and spring blooms – just make sure to wrap up warm before you wind your way through Waddesdon’s wintery wonderland.

Then as spring approaches, the Parkland Spring bulb tours begin in the beautiful gardens at Eythrope from February . Depending on the time you visit, you’ll see snowdrops, daffodils, cherry and apple blossoms, cyclamen or tulips.

March will see the reopening of the House for the new season with new displays including two rooms telling the story of Waddesdon and the Rothschild family. March also heralds the return of the celebrated National Trust Festival of Blossom with fresh flower displays in the Manor. And a new nature trail on Miss Alice’s Drive will open, starting at the Conservation Hub to explore the natural environment and the rich biodiversity on site.

Spring will also see the opening of a new exhibition by father and daughter light artists Bruce and Tink Munro, with the former returning to Waddesdon after a 4-year residency more than a decade ago. The inspiration for both artists comes from their relationship with the natural world and the new works will explore time and place through digital photography, light, projection and sound, including a light translation of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

In April the popular National Trust Easter Adventures programme returns with a fun-filled outdoor trail jam packed with games and creative activities around the garden.

May will bring a unique interactive installation to the grounds, and the stars of the show are the trees. Experience The Tree Listening Project with the help of headphones and advanced acoustic technology and you will be immersed in the secret world of trees, listening as water travels from the roots to the leaves, and understanding the important role of trees in supporting our ecosphere.

There is also the return of Art in Nature as leading land and environmental artists come to Waddesdon to create more beautiful works, including another intervention by James Brunt. And the much-loved tours of Eythrope gardens will be giving people even more opportunity to enjoy the beauty all around us.

As summer arrives Open Farm Sunday in June gives a fascinating insight into the crucial work of farmers. Hosted on the wider Waddesdon estate, visitors will be able to learn more about farming, the countryside and wildlife, with activities for the whole family including sheep-shearing, tractor riding and environmentally friendly farming demonstrations.

During July and August , the National Trust’s Summer of Play comes to Waddesdon with extra special trails, activities and den building.

Golds, scarlets, oranges and yellow show Waddesdon in dazzling Autumn colour when September and October bring falling leaves and changing temperatures. And as the scarves come out so will the spooky as Haunted Half Term returns with a week of activities and family fun throughout the house and grounds. In 2026 Halloween will be bigger and better than ever, so watch this space.

Alongside all this, there is a regular programme of outdoor events, and plenty of opportunities to simply enjoy the peace and beauty of the surroundings, from glorious garden walks and explorations on the estate to being mindful of mindfulness, whether gazing at the stars, witnessing the dawn chorus, pot planting, meadow walks, and a range of activities and tours spotting the animals and insects that make Waddesdon their home.

New programme to boost local employment

Connect to Work which will launch in April 2026

Buckinghamshire Council is launching a new ‘Connect to Work programme’ due to commence in April 2026. The initiative aims to help residents overcome barriers to employment and unlock meaningful job opportunities.

It is part of a nationally funded scheme, and Buckinghamshire Council has secured nearly £7m from the Government to support up to 1,640 residents over the next four years, offering tailored assistance to those facing particular challenges getting into work.

Connect to Work is specifically designed to support residents who may have found it hard to find employment due to circumstances such as disability, long-term health conditions, homelessness, or caring responsibilities. Connect to Work links individuals with employers who can support their specific needs, allowing them to access work and build their career.

Steven Broadbent, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, says: “Connect to Work is about more than just finding jobs; it’s about building confidence, developing skills, and creating real opportunities for people to thrive. This programme will be a lifeline for many in our community and it reflects our commitment to inclusive growth and ensuring every resident has the chance to succeed.”

Connect to Work is a key part of Buckinghamshire’s wider Economic Growth Plan, which includes a significant focus on building skills, boosting productivity, and reducing inequality in Buckinghamshire, to improve access to work for individuals and to support the county’s economic growth as a whole. Connect to Work is one of a number of strands under the council’s ‘skills and employment’ drive which is underpinned by its recently adopted Skills and Employment Strategy.

Recent successes under this theme also include the council’s Skills Bootcamps – which offer free, practical short courses with guaranteed interviews with local employers. Of the most recent cohort, 98% of more than 400 participants completed training with 84% interviewing and 70% now progressing into work, upskilling, or moving into self-employment.

Councillor Broadbent added: “Buckinghamshire’s reputation for entrepreneurialism and innovation is at the heart of these programmes. The Council continues to work closely with local businesses and stakeholders to create the right conditions for success - for both employers and jobseekers. We want to empower our residents at every stage of their working lives. Whether they’re just starting out, retraining for a new role, or returning to work after time away, these council programmes are here to support them. It’s a win-win for our people, communities and economy to increase our shared prosperity.”

Green light for 250-acre nature reserve in Aylesbury

Council approves plans for new reserve near Kingsbrook

Buckinghamshire Council has approved plans for a new, 250-acre nature reserve in Aylesbury, just east of the town’s award-winning, nature-rich Kingsbrook development.

The new visitor destination, called Kingsbrook Meadows, will be equivalent in size to around 140 full-size football pitches. It will offer extensive natural greenspace where residents and visitors can help with the creation of woodlands and wetlands, allowing them to explore the wildlife as it develops, enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of the natural world.

This planning approval crowns a groundbreaking partnership between Barratt David Wilson Homes, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and Buckinghamshire Council, who have worked together at Kingsbrook since 2010 to demonstrate that urban development and environmental protection can co-exist.

With work set to start in spring 2026, Kingsbrook Meadows will open in three phases, becoming home to wetlands, meadows, pools, woodlands, walking trails, gardens, and wild play area.

The final phase, due for completion in 2028, will culminate in the opening of a visitor centre, café and shop, with accessibility at the forefront of its design. There will also be a dedicated car park on-site. The RSPB will manage the site once complete, adding to the 220 existing sites it manages across the UK, creating local employment and volunteering opportunities.

Over half of the new site, 168-acres, is classed as a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG), which is a designated area of open green space designed to reduce the impact of new housing developments on protected natural areas.

The first SANG in the north of Buckinghamshire, Kingsbrook Meadows aims to offer an attractive and more accessible alternative to ease recreational pressures from visitors and dog-walkers on Ashridge Commons and Woods within the Chilterns Beechwoods Special Area of Conservation. The new site will be protected in perpetuity for at least 80-years.

Cllr. Peter Strachan, Cabinet Member for Planning at Buckinghamshire Council, said:

“Buckinghamshire is a beautiful, nature rich county, and it’s important we protect it as best we can whilst also playing our part to meet the government’s new housing targets. Kingsbrook Meadows is a great example of how by working together, collaboratively with like-minded strategic partners, sustainable development can be achieved.”

Free Home Upgrades to Cut Energy Bills and Stay Warm This Winter

Support for those struggling to heat their homes

Buckinghamshire residents who live in privately owned homes, including private rental properties, that have low energy performance EPC ratings can apply for free energy-saving upgrades that will help them cut energy bills and stay warm this winter.

Eligible residents could receive up to £30,000 of fully funded energy saving measures, such as loft insulation, wall insulation, solar panels, smart heating controls, and heat pumps.

Having secured just over £3m of funding from the Government’s Warm Homes Local Grant, Buckinghamshire Council has partnered with the National Energy Foundation’s Better Housing, Better Health service to manage delivery of the scheme. This will include assessing applications and managing the pre and post-installation process.

The scheme is now open to Buckinghamshire residents who meet the following criteria:

Your home has an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of D, E, F or G AND one or more of the following also applies -
You live in a household with a combined gross annual income of less than £36,000
A member of the household is in receipt of certain means-tested benefits such as Housing Benefit, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Income Support, Pension Credit (savings and guarantee), or Universal Credit
You live in a pre-qualified postcode area, as determined by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Residents in private rented accommodation must seek approval from the landlord before applying and landlords may need to contribute towards the improvements if they already have a home that has qualified for fully funded support under the scheme.

Carl Jackson, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate Change and Waste said: “Securing this grant funding is great news as it enables Buckinghamshire Council to support some of the most vulnerable people across our county. With funding being limited and winter just around the corner, I encourage people to apply for support straight away.”

Steve Bowles, Cabinet Member for Communities added: “Rising energy costs coupled with the ever-increasing cost-of-living is creating real pressures on households in Buckinghamshire and there will be residents who will struggle to heat their homes this winter. We are always looking for ways to support those who need it and I would encourage anyone who is worried about cost of living pressures to take a look at the support available."

Frightfully exciting news from Princes Risborough

Princes Risborough Town Council are frightfully excited to announce the return of their Halloween Trail on Saturday 25th October from 10am to 1pm on Princes Risborough High Street.

Children, accompanied by an adult, are invited to join the trail, which will take them along the High Street in search of hidden letters in participating retailers' windows. The goal is for participants to find all the letters displayed on cauldrons or potion bottles in retailers windows and write the letters on their trail form to complete Prince the Black Cat’s Halloween spell, which will grant them a spooky treat!

Entry forms can be collected from the Haunted House inside Princes Risborough Library's meeting room from 10am. All children returning their completed form to the Haunted House (inside Princes Risborough Library) before 1pm will receive a free treat bag.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costumes, and guardians are reminded to bring a pen or pencil for each child participating in the trail.

Harvest Festival at Chiltern Open Air Museum

Chiltern Open Air Museum is inviting visitors to step back in time for its Harvest Weekend on 27th and 28th September . The event will celebrate the sights, sounds, and traditions of a rural harvest, with highlights including vegetable displays, apple pressing, horse and cart rides, sheepdog demonstrations, traditional baking, music, Morris dancing, and Tudor re-enactors. Families can also enjoy heritage crafts, working demonstrations, and interactive displays.

New Grange partnership to be paw-sitively delicious

National charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has announced the appointment of award-winning, family-owned company Thomas Franks (no relation to the new Tottenham manager) as catering partner for its Saunderton-based Grange Restaurant.

The partnership promises to bring exciting developments to the much-loved community dining space, including a refreshed focus on seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients, sustainability, and the launch of a brand new out-of-hours events business.

Thomas Franks brings a reputation for serving exceptional food, making them the perfect match for the charity’s values and vision. Their appointment marks a significant step forward in establishing The Grange as a standout destination for both daytime dining and bespoke events.

The Grange Restaurant provides a welcoming space for engaging with the local community and raising awareness about the charity’s vital work - training dogs to alert deaf people to important and potentially life-saving sounds, such as smoke alarms. Everyone visiting the restaurant is directly supporting the training of more of these life-changing dogs.

Visit historic attractions in Oxford and Cambridge for free while staying in an ancient university

Oxford and University's short terms, combined with the Open events in the city, means that visitors can stay cheaply in an historic college this September while enjoying free entry to many historic attractions.

While many universities are welcoming ‘freshers’ and returning students this September, Oxford’s ‘Michaelmas’ terms don’t start until October. That means inexpensive accommodation is still available in historic colleges until at least the end of this month.

Better still, September coincides with Oxford’s remarkable Open events, when many of the city's most important colleges and other famous buildings are open to the public for free.

Johanna Jernberg, a travel expert from the specialist accommodation finder UniversityRooms.com , says: ‘During September, visitors to Oxford and Cambridge can gain free access to many celebrated buildings that are not normally open to the public. Oxford’s Open Doors events take place on 13 and 14 September.

‘Oxford Preservation Trust has run Oxford Open Doors since 2008. Last year, nearly 30,000 people visited well over 100 venues. Among the top attractions this year is Love Lane, an ancient and historic walk that has been closed off to the public for a century. It will be open on Sunday, 14 September.

‘For example, Christ Church in Oxford has rooms and “sets” available throughout September in its historic main site. “Sets” are two single bedrooms that open from a shared sitting room. Many are wood-panelled and all have sofas and chairs for relaxing. Christ Church was used as a filming location and inspiration for many of the scenes in the Harry Potter films. The grand staircase and Tudor Great Dining Hall are two of the most iconic spots within the college. Rooms are available from £120 a night, including bed and breakfast.

‘Magdalen is another historic Oxford college with availability this September. C.S. Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, once taught here. EV chargepoints for Wendover

Bucks first phase of on-street chargepoints now installed

Buckinghamshire Council has installed the first five publicly-accessible electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints in Wendover as part of its ongoing EV charging trial. This initiative is designed to support residents without off-street parking and forms part of the council’s wider commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving local air quality.

The Wendover EV charging trial, launched in February 2024, initially focused on installing in-pavement cable channels to allow residents to safely charge their EVs from home. Building on the success of that pilot, the council is now expanding the trial to include on-street chargepoints, giving residents more convenient options to charge their vehicles close to home.

The project is funded by the East Bucks Community Board and the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund, which helps local authorities deliver charging solutions for communities without driveways or garages.

The council, working with the Wendover EV Working Group – which includes local Members, Wendover Parish Council and local climate action group CLAW – has successfully delivered the first five chargepoints, with a second phase of five more planned for later in 2025. All ten chargepoints are being installed and commissioned by supplier Char.gy, following public feedback gathered through a statutory consultation.

Thomas Broom, pictured, Buckinghamshire Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “It’s fantastic to see publicly-accessible electric vehicle chargepoints being installed on-street across Wendover. This EV infrastructure complements the pavement channels we have already delivered and allows us to test a variety of solutions to help residents without off-street parking charge their vehicles closer to home.

“The trial will continue until February 2026. If successful, we will look at how we can roll out charging points and cable channels on a much larger scale across Buckinghamshire. This is an important step towards achieving the Government’s Net Zero target by 2050 and meeting our own climate change commitments set out in our Climate Change and Air Quality Strategy.”

As of 1 July 2025, there were 384 publicly-accessible EV chargepoints across Buckinghamshire (operated by various providers). This trial will help the council work towards its target of 1,000 publicly-accessible charging spaces by the end of 2027, as set out in its five-year EV Action Plan.

New exhibition celebrates the 90s

This autumn, Discover Bucks Museum invites visitors on a vibrant journey back to the decade of Britpop, Cool Britannia, Pokémon, Power Rangers and dial-up internet, with its new exhibition, I Grew Up 90s .

Running from 25th October 2025 to 22nd February 2026, the exhibition brings together more than 200 iconic objects and artworks that bring the Nineties back to vivid life.

From Teletubbies to Trainspotting, Lara Croft to The Spice Girls, I Grew Up 90s celebrates a decade defined by creativity, optimism and unforgettable pop culture moments. Visitors can revisit toys, games, fashion, films, music and television shows that shaped a generation — and even test their skills on a retro arcade machine featuring classics like Tetris, Tekken, Street Fighter, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

The exhibition is curated by cultural historian and curator Matt Fox, capturing the sights, sounds and spirit of the 1990s.

“Those that grew up 30 years ago in the 1990s - before smart phones, social media or reality TV - can genuinely state that life was very different then.” Fox says. “I Grew Up 90s is a time capsule of that era, seen through the eyes of those who lived it as children and teenagers.”

Sam Mason, CEO of Discover Bucks Museum said, "It is delightful to be able to take a trip down memory lane, with artefacts that so many will remember. It is also a little scary to realise that many familiar items that we grew up with now belong on show in a museum! Council secures £265k for new flood resilience projects

Buckinghamshire Council has secured £265,000 from the Environment Agency to deliver two flood management feasibility studies and a natural flood management project running until 2027/28. These projects will complement the £10.5m already allocated to the council’s flood capital programme and will aim to manage surface water before it reaches the county's towns and villages.

One of the projects will explore the viability of Property Flood Resilience measures to protect homes and other properties which have suffered from frequent internal flooding in recent years.

Other projects will explore ways to use natural landscapes to help reduce and manage the speed and peak of surface water flows within a catchment, before they arrive in our towns and villages. The new natural flood management study will involve working with parish councils and partners in the north of the county along the River Great Ouse upstream of Milton Keynes.

As part of a larger initiative, the Blue Lagoon Natural Flood Management project will introduce measures such as tree-hinging dams and leaky woody dams in partnership with Milton Keynes City Council. These will help reduce flood risk to the new East West Rail line, while also restoring natural landscapes lost to recent human activities.

Mayor opens new Games Bench at Aylesbury Canal Basin

Aylesbury Town Council has installed a new games bench at Aylesbury Canal Basin, which was officially opened by Mayor Cllr Nidha Mehta on Thursday, 21st August.

The bench, designed to encourage community engagement and outdoor recreation, features a built-in chess and draughts board and is free to use for anyone, at any time. Constructed from recycled plastic, the bench reflects the Council’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in public spaces.

Importantly, the bench has been designed with accessibility in mind, one section of the seating is shaped to accommodate wheelchair users, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the space equally.

The opening ceremony was attended by Cllrs Bateman, Dixon, and Lloyd, alongside two members of the Aylesbury Chess Club, who tested out the bench with a few friendly games. Their presence highlighted the bench’s potential as a hub for casual play and social connection.

The bench is located on land leased by the Buckinghamshire New University, whose support was instrumental in bringing this project to life. The Town Council extends its sincere thanks to the University for their continued collaboration and commitment to enhancing Aylesbury’s public spaces.

AI helping local clinicians

New technology means more time can be spent with patients

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is trialling a new kind of technology that could change how doctors and nurses work by giving them more time to care.

This month, the Trust is launching its first-ever pilot of ambient AI in two departments: Rheumatology and Community Paediatrics. The project is led by the Buckinghamshire Research and Innovation team and uses the NHS England approved CLEARnotes, a tool developed by NHS clinicians and health tech company 33n.

CLEARnotes listens securely to conversations between patients and clinicians during appointments and automatically creates accurate notes. This means staff don’t have to spend time typing or writing up records after the appointment — freeing them up to focus fully on the person in front of them. All patients involved will be asked to consent to the technology being used with no obligation to do so.

In other NHS trials, this technology has helped increase productivity by up to 25%, allowing more patients to be seen without adding pressure to staff.

The pilot supports the Trust’s goals of improving patient experience, making services more efficient, and supporting staff wellbeing. It also fits with the NHS Long Term Plan, which calls for smarter use of digital tools to reduce admin and improve care.

Ryan Kerstein, Associate Medical Director for Research and Innovation at the Trust, explained: “We chose to start with Community Paediatrics and Rheumatology because they’re among our most complex clinics. Our aim is to give clinicians the freedom to focus entirely on the patient, rather than splitting their attention with paperwork.”

The pilot will run for three months. Feedback from staff and patients will help decide whether to expand the technology to other areas of the Trust.

Funding available for community projects

Applications invited for grants up to £7,500

A ‘boosted’ pot of funding launches this week for community projects in South Oxfordshire.

More money has been made available for South Oxfordshire District Council members to award to community projects through the Councillor Community Grant Scheme.

Previously council members had £5,000 to award community and voluntary organisations in their wards, but this has been increased to £7,500 which was approved earlier this year.

The grant scheme launched on Monday 18th August and is open to not-for-profit community organisations whose primary purpose is to benefit the residents of South Oxfordshire this includes town and parish councils.

Organisations can apply for grants from £250 up to a maximum of £7,500 from each councillor (budget permitting). For wards with multiple councillors, applications may be considered by all ward members together to determine funding, and organisations can apply to multiple councillors/ wards should their project benefit a wider area.

Previous organisations that have been awarded funding through this grant include:

New rowing blades for Wallingford Rowing Club
Solar panels for the roof of the Players Theatre in Thame
Supporting a new community orchard in Cuddesdon and Denton

Jenny Welham from Dorchester Parish Council, who used their funding for a refurbishment of their basketball court said: “Many of the teenagers who live in the village are now enjoying proper games and this has encouraged more outdoor activity and exercise.”

Cllr Georgina Heritage, Cabinet Member for Communities at South Oxfordshire District Council said: “This grant is a great opportunity for our councillors to directly support community projects in their area.

“We’re very proud to have the ability to use this funding to support the projects that we see making a difference to the people and places we see and work alongside every day.

“I encourage all community and voluntary organisations in the district to contact their ward councillor and tell them about their projects and the benefit that additional funding will make.”

The council is particularly keen to hear from projects that have a big impact for residents, such as activities that protect and restore our natural world, promote action on the climate emergency and improve economic and community well-being.

The Councillor Community Grant Scheme closes at midday on the 5th December. Organisations will hear if they have been successful from February next year.

This isn’t the only grant from South Oxfordshire District Council that has had a boost this year, council members also approved an increase in funding for the 2025–2027 Revenue Grant recipients. An additional £521,000 has been added to the two-year funding bringing the total to £1,188,951, which will be used to support 17 organisations across the district over the next two years.

Local pupils receive GCSE results

The long wait is over for thousands of students across the country today (21 August 2025), as pupils receive their GCSE exam results.

Last week thousands more received A-level, BTEC and NVQ results.

Ade Osibogun, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Education & Children’s Services said: “A huge well done to all those who have picked up their results today and last Thursday. The wait between exams finishing and results coming out can feel endless but now the day is finally here. Congratulations to those who have worked hard, I hope your efforts have paid off and you’ve achieved the results you were hoping for.”

Ade continued: “We know that some students may be disappointed with their results but remember, there is plenty of support and help available. Speak to your teachers at school or college and also with friends and family. There is also a lot of support you can access online.”

Classic & Vintage Show returns to village

14th show is ready to roll

The 14th ‘Chearsley Classic & Vintage Show’ will take place on Sunday 14th September at the Chearsley Cricket Ground, on the Winchendon Road, at the edge of the village. And with several hundred vehicles already registered to attend this year’s event, the show is well on the way to meeting the target of 500 vehicles.

This year’s show will open to the public at 11am and, once again, entry and parking are free of charge.

In addition to enjoying a wide selection of Classic and Vintage vehicles, those attending will also be able to visit a range of arts & craft stalls and trade stands. There will also be a fairground and other entertainments for youngsters, a programme of live music and a wide range of food and drinks available from the bar, barbecue and specialist food trucks.

In previous years the show's programme has often included a ‘flypast’ provided by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and they have kindly confirmed that this will once again take place during the afternoon of this year’s show.

The show will feature a series of awards, including two trophies in memory of two of the show’s great supporters over the years, Fred Crawford and Keith Turnbull. They include an award for ‘The Coolest Car’ which will again be chosen by youngsters visiting the show.

Funds raised during the show will be invested in the development of Chearsley Cricket Club, including Juniors’ and Womens’ teams.

In addition donations are made to a range of charities. In recent years, these have included ‘The Chearsley Village Trust’, ‘Thames Valley Air Ambulance’, ’The RAF Benevolent Fund’, ‘The Florence Nightingale Hospice’, ‘Thames Valley Air Ambulance’ and ‘The Nic Willoughby Fund’, in memory of a much-loved former player, who lost his life tragically at the age of 22 to an undiagnosed heart condition.

Town council welcomes residents and visitors back for their final Farmers Market of the year.

A treat for food lovers, Princes Risborough Farmers Market features goods grown and crafted with care by local producers — many located within a 40-mile radius of Princes Risborough.

First Tidy Town Taskforce Event for Aylesbury

As part of its ongoing Support Local initiative, Aylesbury Town Council has successfully launched their Tidy Town Taskforce - a community-led effort aimed at enhancing the appearance of Aylesbury Town Centre and fostering civic pride.

Over 75 Volunteers from across the town, including local businesses, families, residents and Councillors, The Aylesbury Wombles, Dan’s Community Charity, Aylesbury 1 ^st Scouts, Aylesbury 1 ^st Brownies and Rainbows came together to tackle litter, remove weeds, and clean public spaces such as bins, planters, signage, and street furniture. The event highlighted the power of collaboration and the shared commitment to keeping Aylesbury welcoming and well-maintained.

All necessary equipment was provided by the Town Council, with many participants also bringing their own tools. Refreshments were available throughout the day, helping to keep spirits high as the community worked side by side.

Leader of the council Cllr Richard Lloyd said: “It was fantastic to see so many people from our community taking such pride in our town centre and giving up their own personal time to make a difference, it was very humbling to see and be part of.”

The Council extends its thanks to everyone who took part and looks forward to future events that continue to strengthen community ties and celebrate local pride.

Everybody dance now!

Dance professionals Karen Hauer and Gorka Marquez have temporarily broken away from their tutoring roles on Strictly Come Dancing to entertain dance fans across the UK with a new stage show ‘Speakeasy’. And last night at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre the couple didn’t put a foot wrong.

The concept is simple – the action takes place in a ‘Speakeasy’ bar – popular in the roaring 20s I believe, complete with a most excellent live band and three superb vocalists. Inspiration has been taken from Bonnie and Clyde and The Great Gatsby but soundwise there’s a very modern rock pop edge to the score which features songs from the days of Swing though Rock’n’Roll to recent times, often in new and interesting arrangements.

It’s a theatrical show and with no dialogue to get in the way, that means non stop music and dance from the moment the curtains lift, with stompin’ versions of cracking tunes from across the ages providing a rock solid accompaniment for the high energy dance routines. I wasn’t sure if there was a story unfolding, but there seemed to be some heartache and boy finds girl and then loses girl and then finds her again anguish and joy in the more intimate dance sequences.

There’s costume changes and a supporting chorus line of athletic performers who get a chance to show off their respective talents, from ballet to acrobatics and street dance, while also playing their parts in an impressive ensemble for the main routines. Strictly fans will recognise elements of classic steps from the Charleston to Mamba, Salsa, Foxtrot, Samba and more, choreographed beautifully into a varied and compelling evening of glitz, glamour, movement and emotion.

Musically there’s something for everyone, from ‘Putting On The Ritz’ to Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’, Grace Kelly (Mika) and musical theatre classics like Cabaret’s ‘Willkommen’ and ‘Mein Herr’ (the music to Gorka’s Couple’s Choice routine on Strictly with partner Helen Skelton last year).

Strangely, I thought, Karen and Gorka, don’t actually speak a word to the audience during the show but let their dancing do their talking for them. It spoke volumes though, they were exciting to watch live and the whole show was thoroughly enjoyable, even to me – an occasional Strictly viewer rather than a devotee!

Fashion Forward winner announced

Oxford luxury hotel, The Store Oxford, and independent design talent management body, Oxford Fashion Studio , are delighted to announce Ella Douglas as the worthy winner of ‘Fashion Forward’, the inaugural edition of the establishments’ joint fashion design competition, aimed at independent UK designers.

As part of the competition, a group of talented young designers presented their creations to an illustrious panel of judges, including: Anusha Couttigane, Head of Advisory at Vogue Business ; Erin Robertson, fashion designer and winner of Project Runway (Season 15, 2016); Hannah Kane, Editor and Lecturer at the London College of Fashion ; Tiffany Saunders, Fashion & Runway Director at Oxford Fashion Studio ; George Graham, Founder and CEO at Wolf & Badger ; and Simon Drake, General Manager of The Store .

Ella Douglas – who by coincidence, is Oxford born and bred – will be installing her creations from 3rd ^t February 2025, to be showcased throughout ‘fashion month’. Ella’s work will face Oxford’s bustling Broad Street, gracing The Store’s spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows, once belonging to Boswells department store, whose premises the hotel now occupies, and previously used to display a treasure trove of fashion, accessories, cosmetics and haberdashery items. Ella will also be e-tailing her winning collection on both the UK retailer Wolf & Badger – purveyors of independent designers – and via Oxford Fashion Studio’s new digital platform, providing an added spotlight on independent talent.

Hannah Kane, Fashion Consultant at London College of Fashion, says, “It’s a pleasure to support and play a role in this significant initiative to shine a light on the best emerging talent that Britain has to offer. Ella Douglas’ distinctive approach to avant-garde design draws inspiration from queer identities, subcultures and unconventional aesthetics. A recent graduate of Central Saint Martins, Douglas’ bold design elements include 17,000 hand-applied spikes and industrial-influenced textures, forming a unique fusion of identity, narrative and unapologetic style. Douglas’ window display at The Store Oxford will base itself on transforming the grit of transportation into an opulent fashion statement, in line with her collection being a reimagining of trucker culture and queer aesthetics. The backdrop will be adorned with Oxford Trucking Hats arranged over distinct repurposed tyre shelving, to form a blurred mosaic of hues amidst a sea of parking tickets. The interactive window – equipped with QR codes for wider collection engagement – will create a captivating juxtaposition against the city’s traditional university charm, whilst paying homage to its rich motor industry heritage.
