MS grant boost

Physiotherapy at the Chilterns MS Centre has been backed for a second year by the Thriving Communities Fund, a Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust grant scheme for community projects.

The trust has granted £10,000 towards the ongoing costs of providing this vital service to people affected by multiple sclerosis.

Regular physiotherapy and support can help people with MS to maintain mobility and cope with their symptoms better, enabling them to remain independent for longer and live a positive life.

One person benefiting from the treatment is Anna, 38, who lives in Aylesbury. She has been coming to the centre for a range of treatment and support for MS.

Anna said: ‘The Chilterns MS Centre offers me so much more than I can access on the NHS. Services I benefit from on a regular basis are physio and Pilates classes, oxygen therapy, OT support, acupuncture and various workshops such as fatigue management and nutrition.

Pilates in particular has improved the strength in my legs and core and that helps me to sit up, and it’s really helping my back pain, as my posture improves. I do some mat work at home but I don’t have any equipment or Rachel there to help me, so coming here is really important for me. And the social support and friendships made are priceless. I would be lost without the centre.

The Thriving Communities Fund Panel was unanimous in its decision to award the grant in order to support the Chilterns MS Centre to continue its vital work.

In a statement it said: ‘We recognise the difference the centre makes to people’s lives and we’re immensely proud to be able to support them. Allowing individuals to live independently is something we’re passionate about.’

The trust also awards Springboard Grants of up to £300 to support trust residents with opportunities for wellbeing, education, training and employment.

Tenants and leaseholders with MS can apply to help them fund equipment or services that will help them adapt to life with the condition.
