Sizzling stuff


Orchard View Farm has won the ‘Most Innovative Sausage’ award at this year’s National Sausage Awards.   If this was not enough, the farm also achieved Highly Commended for its ‘Marmite Special’, and runner-up for the ‘Spanish Chorizo’

This is yet another feather in the cap for the award-winning family run farm whose emphasis is on great, affordable, local food.

The farm is based in between Aylesbury and High Wycombe, near Longwick.  As well as rare breed pigs, sheep, deer, bees and chickens, the farm hosts a five-star rated café, farm shop, butchery and restaurant.

Owned by Jim Mackellar who bought the land accidentally 10 years ago, the farm was started and develop closely with his philosophy of enabling access to great food and products, both from the farm and other selected local producers.  Quality and price are key in what is provided.

Jim said: ‘We provide a unique Farm to Fork experience for everyone.’

Two full-time butchers are employed on the farm with a combined experience of 85 years. They work closely with the farm chefs to come up with ever more innovative products to put in the butcher’s counter and on the menu.  All products are hand-made on the farm, with an ever-increasing number being free from all allergens as well as being sulphate free.

Winning the award Jim said: ‘This amazing award is a great testament to the fantastic team at the farm and their dedication to providing simply the best food. I am so proud of them.’

Orchard View Farm occupies 27 acres of pasture land nestling at the foot of the Chiltern Hills.  The farm has often been described by visitors as a ‘hidden gem’ .

The beautiful location is only part of what draws people to the farm in ever increasing numbers. Word of mouth is the main form of advertising with personal recommendations being highly effective.  They say customers love the welcoming atmosphere, passionate staff and of course the amazing food.

This prestigious award will add to the many others that the business, farm and butchery has gained.

The farm is home to rare breed Large Black pigs who are class 1 certified rare breed, Jacob sheep, a herd of pure white fallow deer as well as bees, turkeys and chickens. 

Archie and Isla, Jim’s children, own the chickens and sell the eggs in the farm shop to earn pocket money.

Other awards the farm has won include Best Rural Business, Best Sausage in London and the South East, and Pie Awards.

The environment and responsibility for it, is a cornerstone of the farm’s operation, with a major drive to reduce packaging.  Currently customers are being urged to bring their own packaging to use at the butcher’s counter.  On the farm staff don’t use any pesticides and have an active bird of prey breeding program with both nest boxes and set aside habit areas for hunting.

Orchard View Farm is on a continuing and ever-evolving journey and this award provides further confirmation that Jim and the team are on the right track to secure the future for the farm.
