Swan in a million!

Restaurant spreads its wings

The Swan Inn enjoys an eviable location at the quieter end of Old Amersham High Street. And following a four-week refurbishment, this beautiful Grade II listed building has reopened with a fresh new look that successfully combines its centuries-old character with stylish contemporary touches.

Amanda and I recently visited for lunch to see what had changed, and it quickly became clear why the restaurant was buzzing on a Tuesday lunchtime. The refurbishment has been carried out sympathetically, respecting the building's original architecture while introducing comfortable new seating, a beautifully restored bar and an elegant yet relaxed dining room. The result is a warm, welcoming space that feels both timeless and modern. There's also a pleasant beer garden for al fresco dining and a small car park to the rear, making it an easy destination to visit.

From the moment we arrived, we were looked after impeccably by Luca and Francesca, whose friendly, attentive service struck just the right balance between professionalism and genuine hospitality.

The Swan has always enjoyed a reputation for quality food, and its new seasonal menu certainly lives up to expectations. Amanda chose the 21-day dry-aged ribeye steak with red wine caramelised onions and triple-cooked chips. Cooked perfectly to her liking, the steak was wonderfully tender, juicy and packed with flavour, while the crisp, fluffy chips made the ideal accompaniment.

I began with pan-seared scallops, beautifully caramelised on the outside and wonderfully succulent. For my main course I selected the pan-seared duck breast served with beetroot, peaches, potato pavé, asparagus and a rich cherry jus. Every element on the plate was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, with the sweetness of the fruit complementing the rich duck superbly.

Desserts were every bit as impressive. It was refreshing to see Flaming Baked Alaska on the menu – a classic that's becoming increasingly rare – and it certainly didn't disappoint. I opted for the Chocolate Nemesis with Amarena cherries and raspberry sorbet, an indulgently rich dessert perfectly balanced by the sharp fruit and refreshing sorbet.

The new menu showcases the very best of seasonal British ingredients, with dishes including pan-roasted lamb rack, grilled lemon sole, Wagyu steak burger, pie of the day and traditional Sunday roasts, alongside imaginative vegetarian options. Midweek visitors can also take advantage of excellent value lunch and early evening menus, offering two courses for £20 or three courses for £25, served Monday to Friday between noon and 6pm.

Beyond the food, The Swan has invested in the future by creating four new jobs, reinforcing its commitment to exceptional service. Upstairs, a private dining and function room seating up to 40 guests provides an attractive venue for birthdays, anniversaries and family celebrations, while the main restaurant now offers around 70 covers.

Our visit exceeded expectations in every respect. Excellent food, generous portions, polished yet friendly service and a refurbishment that enhances rather than overwhelms the building's historic character make The Swan Inn one of the finest dining pubs in the area. Whether you're looking for a relaxed lunch, a special evening meal or a traditional Sunday roast, this latest chapter in The Swan's long history is well worth experiencing.
