It's Ale-ementary my dear Watson!
Sherlock Holmes and The Bitter of The Baskervilles
at The Six Bells, Thame
Forget everything you think you know about Sherlock Holmes. The Bitter of the Baskervilles is a gloriously wacky, zany piece of Fringe-style musical comedy theatre that takes the familiar detective and tells of his antics in a story full of wonderfully energetic twists and turns.
Performed by a talented cast of just four, the production packs an extraordinary amount into its running time. The actors sing, dance, act and play instruments, with snippets of modern pop songs cleverly woven into the story, to fit the action, and provide some of the show's funniest moments.
The audience is very much part of the experience, adding to the sense that anything could happen next. An impressive set, excellent sound and lighting and a relentlessly fast pace make the whole thing feel remarkably polished, despite its delightfully anarchic spirit.
Much of the comedy comes from the cast themselves, whose over-the-top antics, infectious enthusiasm and exaggerated acting keep the energy levels high throughout. They clearly enjoy performing together, and that enjoyment is infectious.
It is clever without taking itself too seriously, energetic without becoming exhausting, and, above all, thoroughly entertaining.
If you're looking for a conventional Sherlock Holmes adaptation, this probably isn't it. But if you fancy an evening of lively, inventive and very funny theatre, The Bitter of the Baskervilles is well worth catching, especially as the touring theatre company from Birmingham's Old Joint Stock Theatre can currently be seen performing their show on a tour of Fullers pubs.
